The Yamaha Disklavier is one of the most popular pianos in the world, with a simple operating module that helps players adapt easily. However, while you own it, you should also be very careful, as it’s a bit delicate. Like a lot of pianos its size, you will need to be very careful with a lot of things, including how you place it, how you deal with its maintenance, and much more.

Here are some things you should take note of:

The piano’s location

You should always put your Yamaha Disklavier at the position where its sound can best be amplified. Reflective surfaces cause a lot of echoes, so be wary of those

Ventilation, ventilation, ventilation

Make sure that the ventilation levels are sufficient. Yamaha Disklaviers need a lot of ventilation, but you also need to be careful not to place them in the path of incoming blowing air. For optimal placement, put your piano in the center of a room or against a wall that divides two rooms.

You should also be vigilant about placing the piano close to an exterior wall. Outside weather conditions could be detrimental to the quality of the tone and the volume of the piano in general, so be wary of those walls. Space is an important feature of your ideal placement position, so make sure the piano has enough of that.

Be careful with windows

Whatever you do, make sure that you never place the Disklavier close to a window. The cabinet that comes with this piano is made of wood, and this means that excess humidity, direct sunlight, and temperature swings will be detrimental. All of these could easily get to the piano if you place it close to a window, so be careful about that.

If you have to put it close to a window, then make sure that it is placed behind a curtain.

Avoid heat at all costs

Heat is something that you also need to be wary of when it comes to your Yamaha Disklavier. Make sure you keep it away from hot air vents and other sources of heat, as heat could damage the entire finish of the piano (as well as some important internal parts) and cause changes in the balance of sound and general tone.

There’s a lot of damage that can be done when it comes to the Disklavier and heat, so just be careful not to damage it by putting it in direct contact with heat

Keep humidity under control. When relative humidity begins to enter the 40 to 45 percent range, then you need to get the piano out of there. You should also be careful about moisture; if you’re going to bed on a wet and rainy night, then make sure that you close all windows in the piano’s location and close the lid.

Sudden temperature changes should also be accommodated properly. When you find that a cold room suddenly gets warm it is possible that moisture condenses the Disklavier strings and other metal parts that the piano has and cause the entire thing to rust. A lot of felt parts can also develop issues this way, thus affecting the way they work and casing them to develop unclear tones.

So, if you’re moving the piano into a room in a cold climate or in an air-tight location, make sure that you keep the sudden changes in temperature in mind.
