Piano Lessons - Benefits of Piano Training

Benefits of Taking Piano Lessons

Did you know there are many benefits to learning to play the piano?  If you are considering piano lessons for yourself or for your children, they can be a great way to develop motor skills, focus and motivation and even some social skills.

Motor Skills

Playing the piano involves using both of your hands independently, each doing different actions. Different keys need to be pressed simultaneously, and the rhythm for each hand can vary widely. It might sound like a daunting task to master, but it’s not that hard to do once you get the hang of it. Piano lessons are probably the easiest and most straightforward way to develop better motor skills. You may not think there is a lot of physical exercise happening, but a good piano practice can challenge your energy level! You need consistent concentration, as both of your hands will have to move around quite a bit. Children taking piano lessons usually get better sleep and spend less time in front of television and computer screens, after they have had a lesson. Using both of their hands to play piano, can also helps them to become a bit ambidextrous, which can make the development of other skills easier, later in life.

Focus and Motivation

Concentration is a huge part of playing piano! During your piano lessons, you’ll have to keep your mind sharp. Focus is important to get your hands to move properly and play the correct notes; and it continues to develop over time.  You will also need motivation, to want to continue playing and persevere when it gets difficult. With focus and motivation, progress can be made quickly, and students can hone their skills to get better with practice. Both children and adults experience a boost in self-esteem when taking piano lessons due to their newly developed skills and aptitude. This tends to increase their motivation, so students find it easier to focus on specific tasks, for longer periods of time.

Social Skills

Playing the piano can also help children and adults with their social skills. Playing for others can be a good way to interact with friends and family. It allows the piano player to show off their skills, talk to people about what they are learning in their lessons and maybe even have a piano recital to play someone’s favorite song. If a piano student is willing to dedicate the time and effort to strengthening their skills, it could become a viable career option for them! So taking piano lessons now, could be the start of learning many new skills and maybe even a future career!
