The classifications of grand pianos

When it comes to grand pianos, there are actually a lot of various sizes to choose from and make a distinction. These classifications make rand pianos very diverse. So, while many people can simply call on baby grand pianos and normal grand pianos a lot, there are actually up to 7 classifications of grand pianos available:

  • Petite grand: The petite grand is the smallest form of a grand piano. These ones range from about 4′ 5″ to about 4′ 11″ in length. They’re especially built for spaces that are limited, although it’s worth noting that the pianos can’t produce the type of force and volume that you get with the bigger ones.

  • Baby grand: Baby grand pianos are perhaps the most popular form of grand pianos for domestic use. They measure between 5″ and 5′ 5″. They provide better sound and force than the petite grand pianos, and considering how they fare with the bigger models, they provide higher cost effectiveness.

  • Medium grand: The medium grand piano is generally also known as a classic grand piano. They measure between 5′ 6″ and 5′ 8″.

  • Professional grand: Also known as “full grand pianos,” these ones measure anywhere between 5′ 9″ and 6′ 2″ in length.

  • Parlor grand: Parlor grand pianos are another very popular type of grand piano for use in the home. They measure between 6’3″ and 6′ 10″, and they are an awesome addition to any home. They’re larger than a lot of other categories, and they provide a richer depth of sound as well. So, they work effectively as both aesthetic pieces and functional pianos.

  • Semi-concert grand: The “ballroom grand” pianos, as they are usually called, these ones measure between 6′ 11″ and 7′ 8″ in length. They’re an appropriate choice for musicians performing in halls and concert venues.

  • Concert grand: In the world of grand pianos, it doesn’t get any bigger tha the concern grand pianos. They measure between about 8’11” and 9″ on average, but there are times when they get even bigger. Compared to others, these pianos provide the highest levels of volume depth, as well as a balanced tone and rich sound. They’re the best form for orchestras, music venues, etc.

  • A lot of the time, piano manufacturers classify their grand pianos into three; the baby grand, the grand, and the concert grand. If you see this categorization, then you’ll most likely find that a baby grand piano is one that’s less than 6″ long. A grand piano will measure anywhere between 6″ and 7″ and you get the “concert grand piano” tag for any one that is longer than 7″.

If you’re hoping to get something that works more for domestic use, then you should be looking more between the baby grand piano and the parlor grand piano. These ones provide a better sound experience, especially in a smaller space.

For a recital or venue hall, however, feel free to look higher.

The beginner’s guide to piano maintenance

Thinking of getting a piano? Ten you should know what to do and how to maintain it. Owning a piano is no small feat, but you can handle it. Let’s see how:

    Positioning it

Perhaps the first thing you need to think about it finding the right position for your piano. Whether a grand piano or an upright piano, it’s important that you place your asset in somewhere that can’t possibly damage it over time.

A piano is kind of like a piece of furniture – if you place it somewhere that doesn’t help it, then it can wear and tear much faster. So, what do you look out for?

The first thing you have to consider is that people will most likely be walking past it a lot. So, you should put it in a location where it isn’t so prone to scratching or its. A children’s playing room, your kitchen, etc. are off limits, essentially.

The position should also be somewhere that has proper cooling and heating – not too much, that is. Excess dryness or humidity can affect the timber in your piano and cause it to split or crack. Obviously, you don’t want that. All in all, the location should have a moderate temperature. This helps the piano to stay in tune and reduces the chances of the piano developing some kind of problem or the other.

    Handling moves

There are times when you might need to move your piano from a room to another – or even between houses.

If you’re moving from one room to another and the floor of your house is smooth, then it’s recommended that you get a piano trolley to help make the move possible.

Note that most pianos have their main weight at the back, so you can just tilt them a little to provide a bit of balance. So, make sure to get professional piano overs to handle the move. Trying to move it by yourself can end up being detrimental.

    Effective maintenance

There’s always an argument about the pianos that need more maintenance – some believe it’s upright pianos, but that argument continues to rage on to this day.

However, there are some simple maintenance steps that you shouldn’t miss. Here are a few:

Clean it: Your piano should always be dusted clean regularly. Just get a slightly damp cloth or a chamois and dust it down.

Be careful with its use: Simply put, unauthorized use is not allowed here. If you have children, then make sure they handle the piano with care. However, it’s also recommended that you lock the piano in a room when it’s not being used.

Clear the top: Pianos are very delicate, and so are their tops (usually called “lacquers”). If you keep putting things at the top of pianos, then you risk scratching it and damaging its pristine finish. Also, putting drinks such as tea could lead to big trouble if you end up spilling.

Effective ventilation: Make sure that you frequently open the lid that covers your piano keys regularly to ensure that air is able to move freely – something that the wood will thank you for.
